Goals

Wild animals are affected by biotic and abiotic environments. Although they have many different levels of interaction to human society, it is largely unknown how ecosystems and biodiversity are built and how they are mainteined.

We are trying to understand them using fishes and other animals. We also use ecological, evolutionary, genetic and conservation tools to understand how wild life survive in and adapt to rapidly changing natural and artificial environments.

So far we mainly use Salmonid species, but our interests are not at all limited to salmon or fish species. Hokkaido hosts many exotic wildlife and our university offers a perfect environment for many ecological and evolutionary researches on a wide variety of species (on land or in water).
