Founded in 1876 as Sapporo Agricultural College, Hokkaido University was the first higher educational institution for agricultural sciences in Japan. The university consists of twelve undergraduate faculties, sixteen graduate schools, and the other research institutes and centers, with approximately 4,000 faculty staff, more than 10,000 undergraduate and 6,000 graduate students. The Faculty of Agriculture is the oldest faculty in the university. It was first established to meet the need to open the island of Hokkaido as a new frontier. Since then, it has been the pioneer in agricultural sciences and is one of the more prestigious Agricultural Faculties among those of the National University Corporations in Japan, attracting students from all over Japan.
