○History of Our Lab

You can see the origin of our laboratory as early as the beginning of the 20th century. "Forest Products Processing" was already lectured in the period of Sapporo Agricultural College(1899−1905). Later, the professor of the third laboratory of forestry, which was established in 1911 at Sapporo Agricultural College merged with Tohoku Imperial University (1907−1917), gave the lecture of "Forest Products Processing." In 1921, the laboratory of forest products process enzineering was established in the Department of Forestry, the Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido Imperial University. Dr. J. Kageyama and Dr. K. Negoro both as associate professors at that time, were then in charge of the laboratory management. This was the begining of our lab., and the third lab. forestry and the lab. forest products process enzineering both were responsible for research and education on the utilization of forest products and resources. Both laboratories had close connection in personel affiars, as well as research and education.

The Department of Forest Products, the Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido University, originated from the two laboratories after the Second World War. The name of lab. forest products process enzineering was changed into lab. forest products chemical enzineering, which dealt with the basic and applied reseach on chemical utilization of forest products, chemical processing for wood preservation and wood quality improvement. After some reorganization of the Faculty of Agriculture and Graduate School of Agriculture, our laboratory (present name: lab. forest chemistry) has traditionally been focusing on a wide variety of research field by chemical, biochemical and biological approach, producing a lot of promising graduate students.
