Hokkaido University is located in the center of Sapporo City-the fifth largest city in Japan with a population of 1.9 million. The weather in Sapporo in July is typically very pleasant, thanks for not having a rainy season here in Hokkaido island, which is different from other part of Japan. Daily temperatures are typically between 17 and 25ºC with an average of 20ºC and mean relative humidity is 77%. However, you may need a jacket when you walk around in the evenings in the city.
Sapporo can be reached easily by JR Hokkaido trains from New Chitose Airport (approx. 35 min.), a major hub airport located at the south of Sapporo. The JR trains (so called Rapid Airport) leave at about 15-min intervals from New Chitose Airport station and Sapporo station. The first and last trains for Sapporo leave from New Chitose Airport at 8:17 am and 10:50 pm, respectively. The first and last trains for New Chitose Airport leave from Sapporo at 6:34 am and 8:45 pm, respectively. See details the time table below.

From Narita International Airport (near Tokyo) or Kansai International Airport (near Osaka and Kyoto), where the majority of international flights arrive, connecting flights are available to New Chitose Airport in flight time about two hours. Please consult your travel agency for detail.
There are lots of interesting places in Sapporo you should visit during the conference. In addition, you may enjoy traveling around Hokkaido and Japan before/after the conference. As of June 2009, the approximate exchange rate for US$1 is around 100 Japanese yen. Because of relatively large fluctuation of the exchange rate, we suggest you check it when you plan to change your money.
